Old Wolf was at the south-gate step at 6:00 AM IRL Monday.

He had on the silver-and-blue. He had at his right hand a small folded square of green paper, larger than Sun Xiulan's small folded square — the small careful folded edge of the small square that the Brigade-residual archive's small careful map-paper folded at. He set the small folded square on the south-gate step at his small left side. He did not, before unfolding, look at us.

He said: "I have, since 8:00 PM IRL last night, been at the small alcove drawing the small map. The map is — by my count — at this morning's drawing, complete in three lines and provisional in the small fourth. I will give you the three lines. I will tell you what I count for the small fourth. I will name the small fourth's small careful working name. The small fourth's actual identification I will, by my own small careful pace, give you when I have it."

He unfolded the small square.

The small square was — at the in-game render — a small careful pencil-on-green-rice-paper map approximately twenty centimeters across. The map had, at the small four corners, four small careful labels in Old Wolf's careful hand. The labels were: *Brigade* (NW), *Coalition* (NE), *Hangzhou-9* (SW), and *Fourth* (SE). At the center of the map there was a small careful unmarked node. From the unmarked node four small careful lines ran to the four corners. Along each line Old Wolf had written, in the same careful hand, the small careful named members of each civic line. The lines were dense.

He said: "The unmarked node at the center is *Severing Light*. The four civic lines run from the small careful unmarked node outward. *Severing Light* is, by my draw, the small careful intersection of all four. The intersection is — by the small careful three-IRL-year history of the small careful continental civic-historical record — unique on this server. There has not, since 2011, been a guild at the small careful intersection of all four lines. There is now."

He pointed to the *Brigade* line.

"Original Brigade — under Mei Yulan, Mei Qing's surviving widow, since the third-month-patch reorganization. Inner-circle members: Mei Yulan, Mei Tiezhu (Mei Qing's youngest brother, Brigade-leadership-direct envoy), and four other small careful inner-circle figures whose names I have written on the small line. He paused.

I held the small careful Mei vault key at the time. I am, by the small careful convention, the small careful holder who read it. I gave the small careful Mei vault key to Wanqing on the small careful Monday a week ago. The small careful third input is — by the small careful convention — now readable by Wanqing too. The small careful unsigned letter is at the small careful southern-Cinnabar cairn under the small careful vault. Wanqing may, at her own small careful pace, go to the small careful vault and read it."

Wanqing said: "I will."

Old Wolf nodded once.

Wanqing took the map.

Old Wolf stood up.

The small careful tea-house is *White Crane*, two doors west of the small careful eastern-lane Su-family-acquaintance teacher Mrs. Pan's flat — Mrs. Pan is the small careful retired HZUT mathematics professor my own small specific late wife took the small careful Suzhou-style tea ceremony lessons from in 1998. Sister Lin will be at the small careful four-PM table. Bladeless will receive the small careful Beijing-pipeline post-Continental-One position offer she has been instructed to deliver. Bladeless will — by my count — defer the offer. The deferral is — by the small careful Beijing-pipeline-handler convention — the small careful answer she is hoping for. He walked off west toward the lower-city night market.

The week between Monday and Friday ran at its own ordinary pace.

Wanqing went to the small southern-Cinnabar cairn vault Monday evening at 9:30 PM IRL with Yu Tieshou as small careful tactical escort. She returned at 11:42. She bonded-DM'd me at 11:43: *Map locked in. Letter read. Letter is in the small Mei key archive. The letter's third paragraph names a small specific small civic-historical-context name I will tell you on Saturday at the western fountain bench after Old Wolf names the Quiet Hand. Until then carry the small careful name in your own small careful drawer.* I bonded-DM'd back: *All right.*

The Tuesday seminar ran. Wednesday at the Mu lab Bai Yueran was at the small bench in the rust-colored sweater. We ran two columns. At the lab gate at 5:42 PM IRL she handed me a small folded paper of Suzhou cotton — not a deposit, only a small note in her own hand: *Sister Lin Friday 4 PM. The small specific position she will offer is the small careful Coalition-quiet-section-civic-historical-context-vendor-rotation lead at Quiet Section Limited's small careful Beijing office, post-Continental-One. Friday morning at the cafe Sister Lin was not in pod 12. The small grey-wool intermediate handler was. She did not, the entire shift, look at me. At 11:30 she paid in small bills and left.

At 3:50 PM IRL I walked from the dorm to the small eastern lane.

The small eastern lane was a small narrow lane two blocks east of HZUT's southern gate, the small careful kind of lane the small careful retired HZUT-faculty wives lived on. *White Crane* tea-house was a small clean two-story building with a small careful pale-wood front and a small careful pair of small careful camellia bushes in the small careful pots at the door. The small careful interior was the small careful five-table room of a small careful Suzhou-style tea-house from the early 1990s. Sister Lin was at the small careful corner table at the back, in the small careful pale-grey blazer Manager Fang had said she would wear.

She had on the small careful pale-grey blazer.

I came in at 3:58 PM.

I took off my coat. I sat down across from her.

She said: "Cangtian."

"Sister Lin."

"Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for the receipt."

She nodded.

She said, in the careful even voice of an older woman who had spent two months at the Beijing pipeline finishing the careful handover: "The receipt is yours. The carbon-paper-grade reproduction is on the table. You may take it back when we leave."

The small folded carbon-paper reproduction was, in the small folded square at the small careful right-side edge of the small careful round tea-table, where the small grey-wool intermediate handler had said it would be.

She said: "I have one offer. I will deliver the offer. You may decline, accept, or defer. She said: "The small careful receipt is yours."

I took the small folded paper. I put it in the inside pocket of my jacket.

We finished the small specific cup of small specific Suzhou-style tea each in the small specific four minutes the small specific cup took.

I left at 4:14 PM IRL.

I walked back to the dorm.

In my chest the second voice — *three months and three weeks* — was quiet. The first voice — the old counter — said:
