46: The Café Shift, Three

I came on shift at five-thirty AM Friday morning at Manager Fang's IZ NET CAFE in the small clean grey-blue Hangzhou predawn light, with the small specific cumulative ache in the right shoulder that the cradle band had, in the past three weeks, been logging as a small low-grade chronic muscular alert that the Premium pod's small careful ergonomic engineering had not, by the small precise calibration, fully resolved — and Manager Fang at the front counter looked up at me from the small ledger he had been running and inclined his head a precise quarter-inch and said, "Cangtian. The cradle on pod twelve has been pulled. Cao Lin returned the slip yesterday at six-twelve PM IRL with a small note that he would not, going forward, be using the Tianxia-sponsored pod. He has reverted to the standard community pod six. He has paid the reversion fee out of his own account. The reversion fee is — modest. The note he left on the slip is — *thank you, please pass to Bladeless.*"

I held the counter's edge.

"Manager Fang."

"Mn."

"He left a note for me."

"He did. The note is in the small drawer beside the apron hook. I have not read it. The note is — yours."

I went to the small drawer beside the apron hook. I extracted the small folded slip. The slip was written in the small careful precise hand of an HZUT computer-engineering sophomore who had clearly drafted the note three or four times before settling on the small specific final wording.

> *Bladeless. I have terminated the small specific exclusive supply arrangement. The handler accepted the termination without protest because the small specific Schedule B disclosure had — by the small precise mechanism of having been raised by a small specific outside party — voided the small specific arrangement's small private deniability clause. The handler wired the sign-on bonus back to my account in full at four-twelve PM IRL yesterday with a small additional payment of two thousand yuan he described, in his accompanying message, as a small specific 'parting consideration.' I will not, going forward, accept any further Tianxia approach. I have, in the past four hours since my conversation with you, told my three roommates and my four small specific HZUT computer-engineering classmates about the Schedule B. They have, in turn, told their roommates and classmates. The small civic propagation has begun. I am — not, going forward, going to be a small civic asset to your guild. I will not join. I will not, however, work against you. I am — informing you of the termination as a small civic discharge of my own. The HZUT sophomore population is, by the small specific small civic mechanism, now your shield. Please do not attempt to contact me again. — Cao Lin.*

I read the note twice.

I folded it carefully and tucked it into the inside pocket of my jacket beside the To Save / To Bury notebook.

The note added a small specific eighty- or ninety-person small civic shield to my small running operational picture without my having to do any further small specific work to maintain it.

The note also, in the small specific final sentence — *please do not attempt to contact me again* — politely closed the small specific channel.

The closing was correct. The closing was the small specific civic ethic that the small specific Cao Lin would carry. He did not, in his small specific psychology, want to become a small specific intelligence asset to anyone, including me. He wanted to terminate the small specific Tianxia arrangement and to walk back to his sophomore life and to be left alone. The small specific *please do not attempt to contact me again* was the small specific final discharge of his small specific obligation to me — and the small specific final claim of his small specific independence from me.

I had, in the small precise sense, been trusted to be the kind of small specific second-mover who would respect the small specific final claim.

I would respect it.

I went and clocked in.

***

Manager Fang's morning shift on a Friday was the small specific full-coverage shift — six AM through twelve, with the small specific peak-traffic rush at eight-thirty when the HZUT freshmen and sophomores who had small specific eight-thirty classes came through to refresh their small specific helmet calibrations between sessions, and the small specific transition shift Manager Fang himself worked from twelve through three to give me my small specific lunch break.

I worked the morning at the small steady cadence of a man who had, in the past three weeks, become the small specific morning-shift cadence the cafe had organized itself around. I wiped pods seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. I refilled the sanitizer reservoir at the front counter. I logged the small specific overnight pod-usage statistics into the small specific Tianyu corporate-reporting system that Manager Fang had been required to run since the launch-week period had begun. I noted that pod twelve's overnight usage had, in the past nine hours since Cao Lin had returned the slip, been zero. The pod was, this morning, available for the next small specific reservation.

At seven-fifteen the small specific cafe front-door chime clinked.

I did not look up immediately.

The footsteps that came through the door were the small precise footsteps of three people moving in the small careful efficient body language of a recruitment cell that had done this many times. The small specific Tianxia recruitment cell that had come through this door on Tuesday and Thursday late nights for the past three weeks. The two men. The one woman. The small specific older woman in the pale grey blazer who had recognized my face on October the thirteenth and had not, in the past three weeks, returned to the cafe at the small specific late-night shift she had previously worked.

She had returned this morning at seven-fifteen during the small specific morning shift.

She was, in the small specific sense, returning specifically to see me.

I straightened from the small pod-twelve check I had been running. I crossed to the front counter. I stood beside Manager Fang at the small specific small civic position of *cafe boy who is about to assist a customer.*

The three of them came to the front counter.

The older woman in the pale grey blazer inclined her head a precise quarter-inch.

She said, "Pod six. Three hours. I would like the standard community pod, please."

Manager Fang stamped a slip without looking up from his magazine.

She paid in cash. She took the slip. She turned to me.

She said, very quietly, with the small precise modulation of a woman who had clearly rehearsed the small specific opening line for some hours, "I know your name now."

I held her eyes.

I said, "Mn."

"It is Ye Cangtian. Computer engineering. Freshman. I learned the name on Tuesday from a small Tianxia internal report on a small specific cleft incident in the Black Castle Foothills. The report identified the small specific Pioneer of the Tianlong Server as Ye Cangtian. I had — until the report — been operating under the assumption that the small specific cafe boy I had recognized on the thirteenth was not, in any small specific identifiable way, the small specific player my recruitment cell had been targeting. I was mistaken."

"You were."

"Mn." She inclined her head a precise quarter-inch. "Ye Cangtian. I am not, this morning, going to attempt the small specific recruitment script on you. I am informing you that I have, in the past forty-eight hours, been moved laterally within the Tianxia internal performance protocol. The lateral move is a — small specific developmental rotation. I will, going forward, be working the small specific Beijing inner-recruit pipeline rather than the Hangzhou outer-recruit pipeline. The small specific Hangzhou outer-recruit cell I have been running for the past two months will be transferred to a small specific successor handler whose small specific identity I am not authorized to share. The successor will, by the small specific Tianxia internal pipeline's standard onboarding protocol, attempt to re-establish operational vector against your guild within four weeks. I am informing you because — Ye Cangtian — because I have, in the past forty-eight hours since the small specific cleft incident report came through my channel, read the small specific Pioneer monitoring folder you have generated for yourself in our internal system. The folder has, in the past three weeks, accumulated forty-seven distinct small specific line items. I have, in the past forty-eight hours, decided that the small specific lateral move I have been given is, in fact, the small specific career-advancement opportunity the Tianxia internal performance protocol has framed it as. I am moving up. The small specific cell I have been running has, in the past three weeks, failed to recruit the Pioneer. The failure is, in the small specific Tianxia internal performance protocol, attributed not to the cell but to the Pioneer's small specific exceptional defensive profile. I am, in the small specific sense, being promoted out of the small specific operational vector that has been failing because the small specific exceptional defensive profile is the kind of small specific defensive profile that the small specific senior pipeline wants to see modeled at the small specific Beijing inner-recruit level. I am — telling you because I would like, in the small specific future, to encounter you as a small specific peer rather than as a small specific subject. The lateral move is the move that allows the encounter."

She inclined her head a precise full inch.

She said, "Sister Lin."

The IRL name. She had given it. She had not, in three weeks of small specific late-night shifts, ever given it. She had given it now.

I held her eyes.

I said, "Sister Lin."

"Mn."

"You are not Sister Lin from the dream."

She looked at me for a precise three seconds.

She said, very precisely, "I have been told by my small specific senior pipeline that the small specific *dream* you reference is a small specific internal Tianxia-internal designation that the small specific cleft-incident report flagged you as having referenced in a small specific bonded-channel exchange that the small specific Tianxia internal monitoring folder has, by the small specific listening capacity of a small specific Tianxia-sponsored pod that you are not currently using, partially captured. I do not know what the *dream* is. I am told you do. I will not ask. I am informing you that the small specific information that you have referenced a *dream* is now, by the small precise mechanism, in the small specific Tianxia internal monitoring folder. I am also informing you that the small specific *Sister Lin* I am — is the IRL name my small specific maternal grandmother gave me on the small specific occasion of my small specific birth. I am not, by any small specific previous-life reference, anyone you have previously known. I am the small specific Sister Lin of this timeline only. I am — informing you of the IRL name because I would like the small specific future encounter to be — clean."

I inclined my head a precise full inch.

I said, "Sister Lin. The encounter will be clean."

"Mn."

She turned. She took the small specific slip. She walked to pod six. She took the small specific cradle band off the headrest. She sat. The visor sealed. The cradle band hummed.

The two men beside her sat in pods five and seven without speaking.

Manager Fang turned a page of his magazine.

He said, very quietly, after a beat, "Cangtian."

"Mn."

"That was — clean."

"It was clean because she had been promoted out. The promotion gave her the small specific civic latitude to give me the small specific clean exchange. The exchange would have been impossible last week."

"Mn."

I went back to wiping pods.

The cult absorption meeting at the Greenleaf Inn at ten-thirty would, by the small specific Wenqing schedule, take ninety minutes. The Yu Tieshou trial at the south gate at seven PM would take perhaps two hours. The MoonShadow three-party meeting at the western lower-city fountain at eight PM would take — undetermined.

The small specific Friday was, by the small precise mechanism of the past forty minutes' surprises, expanding.

***

I clocked out at noon. I walked back across the engineering courtyard in the small specific late-October Friday-noon light. The cracked-egg ceiling stain in the dorm room, when I lay down on the lumpy pillow at twelve-fifteen with the cradle band coiled on the desk and the Cao Lin note in my jacket pocket and the small specific Sister Lin lateral-move information in my running operational picture and the small Tianxia line-item-counter in my chest at *forty-seven distinct line items in the internal monitoring folder*, was — over me as it had been every day for the past three weeks.

I did not look at it.

I closed my eyes.

I slept for ninety minutes.

I dreamed, in the small specific way that the past three weeks had been teaching me to dream, of the small specific morning at the Pingjiang Road kitchen window with my mother humming over the millet congee, and the small specific phone call with my father at the small specific *it is not a small thing*, and the small specific morning at Wanqing's third-floor southwest dormitory desk with the small specific green polyester fold and the small specific *I have been in love with you since I was eleven*, and the small specific older Beigong Yan on the balcony at dawn with the small specific bronze cache key, and the small specific eighteen-centimeter calibrated gap at the south-gate step on Tuesday evening, and the small specific Cao Lin note's small specific *please do not attempt to contact me again*, and the small specific Sister Lin's small specific *the lateral move is the move that allows the encounter*.

I dreamed of all of these together at the same time.

The dreaming was — clean.

I woke at one-forty-five.

I got up. I made tea. I drank it.

I logged in at two-fifteen.

The cult absorption meeting was at ten-thirty in-game, which mapped — at the launch-week 2:1 dilation — to four IRL hours from log-in. I would, in the small specific four hours, run two short Severing Path cycles to push the chain to cycle 13/60, eat lunch with Wenqing in-game at the Greenleaf Inn, prep the cult absorption ratification paperwork, and arrive at the cult ratification meeting at the small specific small precise minute the meeting opened.

I started moving.
