340: CW XXIV
September 12, 2038.
Wanqing sent one message: *Published. Journal of Topology and Its Applications.*
The twelfth paper.
Twelve papers in twenty-three years. The crossover paper to the exo-saturation paper.
Professor Liang's note: *The twelfth paper published. The research series now has twelve papers across five journals. The citation count for the series as a whole: 847 citations across the twelve papers.* He paused. *847 citations. The crossover paper and the ninth paper are the most-cited — the crossover paper for introducing the framework, the ninth paper for the topology.* He paused. *The research series is cited in twenty-three academic disciplines.* He paused. *Twenty-three disciplines. The crossover paper entered two.*
Twenty-three disciplines.

Mu Qingyao's October message.
*Sixty formations.* She paused. *The documentation network passed sixty formations in September.* She paused. *Wenqing's count. Not mine.* She paused. *The Server 7 formation is in their second CW. Seed 3 in their bracket — they moved from seed 5 to seed 3 in one year.* She paused. *Wenqing's note: "The Server 7 formation moved to seed 3. Their query system usage is what the second year of documentation network participation looks like — very specific questions, very short sessions, very productive answers. They know exactly what they need."* She paused. *Knowing exactly what you need.*
Knowing exactly what you need.

October.
CW XXIV registration: October 1, 2038.
BDG seed 1. Twenty-second consecutive.
Composite-flow formation seed 1. Eighth consecutive.
Server 7 formation: seed 3 in their bracket.
Wenqing: *The Server 7 formation at seed 3 in their second year. The composite-flow formation was seed 3 in their third year. The Server 7 formation is one year ahead of the composite-flow formation's seeding trajectory.*
One year ahead.
The morphism operating.

The October bench. Twenty-fourth autumn.
Wanqing. TwilightTide. I.
Three at the October bench. Sixteenth year.
"Sixteen years," I said.
"Yes," TwilightTide said. "Sixteen autumns of three at the bench." She looked at the maple. "Sixty formations. Twelve papers. The bench unchanged."
The bench unchanged.
"The ninth composition question," I said.
She shook her head.
"Nothing," she said. "The background is open. The sessions are running. No question." She paused. "Twenty-four years and two months of sessions. The background has been open since March 2037 — eighteen months. The longest open background I've had." She paused. "I'm not worried. The background is open and the sessions are deep and there is no question." She paused. "That's not nothing. That's the floor being fully itself."
The floor being fully itself.
"What does the floor being fully itself feel like," I said.
"Like this," she said. "The bench. The autumn. The maple turning. No question running. The sessions tomorrow will be the same sessions they've always been." She paused. "Twenty-four years of the same sessions. More themselves."

CW XXIV final: December 14, 2038.
BDG versus composite-flow formation.
Ninth consecutive national final between these formations.
Phase 1: 25-24. BDG.
Phase 2: 26-27. Composite-flow.
Phase 3: fifty-two minutes.
Final: composite-flow formation 60, BDG 58.
The composite-flow formation's third national championship.
***
TwilightTide's note: *60-58. Phase 3, 52 minutes.* She paused. *The composite-flow formation wins their third championship. Phase 2 26-27 — they held Phase 2 this year. That's what made the difference.* She paused. *Phase 2 holding: two years ago I said BDG held Phase 1 and Phase 2 and that's what won. This year the composite-flow formation held Phase 2 and that's what won.* She paused. *The floor and the Phase are the same thing. Which formation holds their floor in Phase 2: that's who wins.* She paused. *This year they held theirs more completely than we held ours.*
Which formation holds the floor in Phase 2.
Wenqing: *The composite-flow formation's three championships in six years. BDG: fourteen championships in twenty-four participations. Three for composite-flow in six. Two different rates.* He paused. *The morphism at work in the championship rate.*
The morphism at the championship rate.

The December bench.
Twenty-fourth December.
Wanqing at the bench. The bare maple.
"Three championships in six years," she said.
"The composite-flow formation."
"Yes." She turned a page. "The documentation layer's product is winning championships at a rate the original formations didn't achieve in their first ten years." She turned a page. "BDG's first three championships: CW IV, V, VI — three consecutive. Then CW VIII (sixth) after two misses. The composite-flow formation: CW XIX, XXI, XXIV — three in six, with two BDG wins between." She turned a page. "The composite-flow formation is winning at the same rate as BDG's peak years." She turned a page. "The inherited depth is producing championship-rate performance."
Championship-rate performance from inherited depth.
The twenty-fourth December bench.
Twelve papers. Sixty formations. Three championships.
Ground growing championships.

The October bench. Twenty-fourth autumn.
The sixteenth year of three at the October bench.
I thought about the bracket data while walking to the bench.
CW XXIV registration. BDG seed 1, twenty-second consecutive. Composite-flow seed 1, eighth consecutive. Server 7 formation: seed 3, second year.
The Server 7 formation had moved from seed 5 in their first year to seed 3 in their second. The composite-flow formation had been seed 3 in their third year. The Server 7 formation was one year ahead of the composite-flow formation's trajectory.
Wenqing's notation: *The morphism acceleration at the seeding level.*
What the acceleration meant: a formation that inherited twenty-two years of documentation had a steeper development curve in the early years than a formation that had inherited twelve or fourteen years of documentation. The composite-flow formation had inherited what existed in 2022. The Server 7 formation had inherited what existed in 2028, six years later, when the documentation was richer. More papers. More formation records. More query data.
The morphism's richness was proportional to what it transmitted.
I thought about that sitting at the bench. TwilightTide was looking at the maple turning. Wanqing was on her third page. The bench held all three of us as it had for sixteen consecutive Octobers, unchanged in its wood and bolts and position, different in what it held.
What it held now: twenty-four years of depth accumulating in three people who had been sitting here since before the eighth composition existed, before the twelfth paper was submitted, before sixty formations were in the documentation network. Before any of it. The bench didn't mark these things. The bench held what it held.
The morphism's richness was proportional to what it transmitted. The bench was what it always was.
***
The CW XXIV final.
The composite-flow formation's third championship.
60-58. Phase 2 held by the composite-flow formation. Phase 3: fifty-two minutes.
TwilightTide: *The composite-flow formation held Phase 2 this year. Phase 2 26-27 — one point. They held Phase 2 by one point and the one-point Phase 2 advantage held through fifty-two minutes of Phase 3.* She paused. *Which formation holds Phase 2: that's the predictor. This year they held it.* She paused. *I didn't hold it by one point. They did.* She paused. *Next year I hold it by one point.*
Next year.
TwilightTide's note was characteristic. Not analysis but resolution. Next year she holds Phase 2. Not because she had a plan to hold it — because that was what the formation was for. The floor was what held Phase 2. Deepening the floor deepened the Phase 2 hold. The sessions were deepening the floor.
I had been watching TwilightTide's notes after losses for twenty-four years. The structure never changed. Loss: description of what hadn't held. Resolution: the sessions deepen the floor. Not a tactical adjustment. Not a formation restructure. The sessions. More of the same sessions. More themselves.
What was different about this year's note: *Next year I hold it by one point.* Not "next year I hold it." By one point. She had described the margin. The composite-flow formation had held Phase 2 by one point — 26-27. Next year TwilightTide would hold it by one point. That was a precise resolution. Not "I will hold Phase 2" but "I will hold it by the same margin they held it by." The specificity was new.
The sessions were approaching something specific.
Next year.

Mu Qingyao's December message.
*Sixty formations.* She paused. *Server 7 formation: seed 3 in their second year, reaching the semifinal.* She paused. *Something I keep noticing: the formations that reach the semifinal in their second year are the ones that arrived at post-integration in their first year or before. The post-integration state in year one of competitive play correlates with the semifinal in year two.* She paused. *Not proven — the sample is small. But the pattern is there. Wenqing is tracking it.* She paused. *If the pattern holds: post-integration at year one means semifinal at year two means final at year three or four.*
Post-integration correlating with competitive trajectory.
The data accumulating. Not proven yet. But the pattern visible in the data.
"Did you see Mu Qingyao's message," I asked Wanqing at the December bench.
"Yes," she said. "Post-integration year one, semifinal year two, final year three or four. The Server 7 formation is at final in year three — consistent with the pattern." She turned a page. "The second Server 7 formation final will tell us more. If they reach the final again in year four, the pattern is stronger." She turned a page. "Three championships in six years for the composite-flow formation. If the Server 7 formation reaches the final again in year four — that's championship-pace arrival."
Championship-pace arrival.
The inherited depth producing championship-pace development.
She turned a page. "The composite-flow formation was seed 3 in their third year and didn't reach the final until year five. The Server 7 formation was seed 3 in their second year and reached the final in year three." She turned a page. "One full year ahead at every marker. Seeding, semifinal, final. Every stage one year ahead." She paused. "Wenqing's phrase: morphism acceleration. It's operating at every measurable level."
I thought about what the morphism acceleration was. The Server 7 formation had inherited six more years of documentation than the composite-flow formation had inherited. Six more years of what the documentation network had produced. Six more papers. More formation records. The query system, which hadn't existed when the composite-flow formation joined. All of it transmitted to the Server 7 formation when they joined in 2028.
The richness of what was transmitted was proportional to what was there to transmit. By 2028 there was more to transmit. The Server 7 formation arrived faster because they started from further along.
"What will the next formation inherit," I said.
"Everything the Server 7 formation produces," she said. "Everything they add to the documentation." She turned a page. "What the Server 7 formation adds: their competitive data from year one onward. Their post-integration record. Their CW results." She paused. "A formation joining in 2035 inherits not only what we built but what the Server 7 formation built." She paused. "The network grows richer every year. What it transmits grows richer every year."
Every year richer.
I came to the December bench a second time, alone, in the late afternoon on December 22.
The campus in its winter cold. The bare maple against the grey sky. The bench in its twenty-fourth December.
I sat at the right end.
Twelve papers. The twelfth paper had published in September and now it was December and there were 847 citations across twenty-three disciplines and none of that was visible from the bench. The bench held none of it and all of it equally.
Three championships for the composite-flow formation. One for the Server 7 formation in their first final. Next year TwilightTide would hold Phase 2 by one point. She had said so. She would find out.
The background was still open. Eighteen months. TwilightTide had described it at the October bench: the floor being fully itself. The sessions more themselves. No question running.
The bench in the December cold was also fully itself. No question running. The same bench.
The twenty-fourth December bench.
The bare maple. The winter bench.
Twelve papers. Sixty formations. Three championships for the composite-flow formation. The Server 7 formation in their first final.
Ground growing championships at an accelerating rate.
