*Something happened in the documentation network that I've been watching for since the query system went live.* He paused. *Three formations in the network have reached the post-integration state.* He paused. *Not Black Dragon, Iron Frost, Tianhe Formation, Bai Yueran's formation — those are the formations that developed without the inherited depth morphism. Three new formations: one on Server 7, one on Server 12, one on the cross-server collective we documented in 2033.* He paused. *These three formations are the first formations to reach the post-integration state having started with inherited depth.* He paused. *They built from the documentation. They inherited depth. They developed. They arrived.*

*Server 7 formation: nine years from their first documentation session. Server 12: eight years. Cross-server collective: eleven years.* He paused. *Tianhe Formation: fourteen years from first session to post-integration recognition. The composite-flow formation: my estimate is twelve years.* He paused. *The inherited-depth formations are arriving in eight to eleven years. Three to six years faster.* He paused. *The morphism is working as described.*

I read that note twice. Wenqing's arithmetic was what it was. Three to six years off the timeline. Not a small reduction. If you were building a formation and you expected fourteen years before the post-integration state, and you arrived in eight — you had six years you hadn't expected to have. Six years to keep building.

*Wenqing told me about the three formations.* She paused. *Nine years. Eight years. Eleven years.* She paused. *I came to watch the Black Dragon quarterfinal in October 2016. It took me five years to build the monitoring awareness integration. Fourteen years from my first watching to the Tianhe Formation's post-integration recognition.* She paused. *Eight years. A formation that began with the documentation arrived at what I arrived at in fourteen years, in eight years.* She paused. *I don't feel displaced by that. I feel — relieved.* She paused. *What I built: a path that takes eight years now instead of fourteen. The six years I spent on what the documentation now gives: not wasted. Necessary. Someone had to spend them.*

*Yes,* she said. *The path shortens for every formation that comes after. The formations that built the path can't walk the shorter path. They built it.* She paused. *That's what it means to be first.*

Relief, not displacement. The formations that had spent fourteen years building couldn't get those years back. But those years had produced the documentation. The documentation had produced the shorter path. The path being shorter was the proof that the years hadn't been wasted.

*The three formations.* She paused. *I've been in contact with one of them — the Server 12 formation. Their archivist reached out in July.* She paused. *She asked me: what does arriving at the post-integration state feel like. How do you know.* She paused. *I sent her my account from August 2030. The disruption entering without a boundary.* She paused. *She read it and sent back: "That's what happened to us in April. In Phase 2 minute 9 of a match. We didn't have a name for it. Now we have your account."* She paused. *I gave her vocabulary. Not the experience — the vocabulary for what the experience was.*

*Yes,* she said. *The account gave her words for what she already knew. Not words that created the knowledge — words that described it.* She paused. *That's what phenomenological accounts do. They don't produce the experience. They name what the experience was, for the person who had it and for the person who reads the account years later.* She paused. *The documentation layer at work.*

Wanqing at the bench. The summer maple fully green. The campus in its late June quiet before the summer session students arrived.
"Three post-integration formations in the documentation network," I said.
"First from inherited depth," she said. "Eight, nine, eleven years." She turned a page. "The twelfth questions: which branch addresses this?" She turned a page. "All three, partially. The depth-proportionality of the morphism: Professor Chen's branch. The depletion question: Mu Qingyao's account of feeling relieved rather than depleted — she built the path, the path shortened for others, she feels the shortening as a completion, not a depletion." She turned a page. "And the network's collective production: three formations reaching post-integration in the network is a network-level event. The network produced three post-integration arrivals simultaneously."

"The network effect," I said.
"The network effect," she said. "Three formations reaching post-integration in the same year. Not coincidence — the network produced the conditions for three formations to arrive in the same year. The shared knowledge, the morphism depth, the cross-formation support through the query system." She turned a page. "One formation arriving is an individual event. Three formations arriving in the same year is a network event."

"What does a network event produce," I said.
"I don't know yet," she said. "The data is new. The query logs show what the three formations searched for in the months before their arrival: 'post-integration recognition markers' is the third most common query in the network." She turned a page. "They were looking for what I was writing in 2024 — the phenomenological accounts, the recognition markers. They found Bai Yueran's account from 2030. They found TwilightTide's accounts from the seventh paper. They prepared for arrival by reading about arrival." She turned a page. "The documentation prepared them."

"The research series," I said.
Wanqing turned a page.
"Twenty-first year," she said. "Eleven papers published. Professor Chen's branch paper under review. My second branch — the depletion question — at page 11." She turned a page. "The third branch — the network's collective production — isn't a paper yet. It's a dataset." She turned a page. "The research series is branching and the branches are developing at different rates. The crossover paper produced a series. The series produced branches. The branches are producing papers I don't control." She turned a page. "The series grew past what I built it to be."

"That's the arc," I said.
She looked at me.
"What Grows," I said. "That's the arc's subject. What grew from Ground. The series branching. The network producing. The formations arriving. What Ground grew, growing."

The three formations that had reached post-integration — Server 7, Server 12, the cross-server collective — each sent brief notes to Wenqing's query system in the weeks after their arrival was confirmed. Wenqing forwarded the notes with his own annotation.
Server 7: *We didn't know we had arrived until we read Bai Yueran's account. We read it and said: that's what happened in April.*
Server 12: *The disruption entering without a boundary — yes. We have that. We thought it was a problem to solve.*
Cross-server collective: *Eight formations in eleven servers, running jointly. The post-integration state in a distributed formation: it happened to the eight of us at different times in the same month. Not simultaneous — sequential. One of us, then another, then the third. By the time the fourth arrived, the first three were already describing what it was.*

I forwarded all three to Wanqing.
Her reply: *The cross-server collective's account is the most interesting. Post-integration arriving sequentially in a distributed formation — that's not in the documentation anywhere. The phenomenological accounts describe individual formations. The cross-server collective is a new form.* She paused. *What does it mean for a distributed formation to arrive at post-integration sequentially? Does the first arrival change what the second and third arrive at?* She paused. *That's a twelfth question that isn't in the problem set yet.*
A new twelfth question.
The documentation layer had produced three post-integration formations. The documentation layer had also produced a question that wasn't in the documentation — what post-integration meant for a distributed formation that arrived sequentially.
The formation that arrived produced the question. The question would go into the documentation. The documentation would transmit the question to the next formation.
That was what the layer was building.
I forwarded the cross-server collective's note to Wanqing separately from the other two. The cross-server collective's account was distinct: eight formations in eleven servers, arriving at post-integration sequentially in the same month. Not simultaneous — sequential. One arriving, then another watching the first, then the third.
Wanqing's reply: *What does it mean to watch another formation arrive at post-integration while you are still approaching? Does the watching accelerate the arrival?* She paused. *That's not a twelfth question — that's a question below the twelfth questions. What the network produces in real time, within a single month, within a distributed formation.* She paused. *I don't have the mathematics for this yet. But the question is real.*

The distributed formation arriving sequentially: eight formations in eleven servers, the first arriving in the post-integration state, the second watching the first arrive, the third watching the first and second, each subsequent arrival happening within a context where arrival had been witnessed by the formation that was about to arrive.
The morphism working not just across time — from documentation to new formation — but across simultaneous experience. One formation's arrival transmitting something to a formation that was watching.
The layer was building something it hadn't been designed to build.

Bai Yueran's August message.
*The Server 12 formation's archivist and I have been corresponding since July.* She paused. *She's very precise. She wants to know exactly when the disruption began, what it felt like in the second minute versus the first, what the session was doing before it started.* She paused. *No one asked me those questions when I arrived. I asked TwilightTide after the fact, and TwilightTide had been there and could describe it from the outside, but no one asked me to describe it from the inside at the moment it was happening.* She paused. *I'm trying to reconstruct it six years later.* She paused. *The Server 12 archivist arrived five months ago. She's documenting it now, while it's fresh. The documentation will be more precise than mine.* She paused. *The next formation will inherit better phenomenological accounts than I had.* She paused. *That's the documentation layer learning from what it produced.*

The layer was not static. Each formation that arrived at post-integration and documented its arrival was improving the documentation. The next formation would inherit more precise accounts. The precision accumulated.
The morphism was getting richer with each generation.

The late summer heat. The campus half-empty. Wanqing had been at the library most of the month working on the depletion branch. The branch was at page 11 by August — slower progress than some years, because the depletion question was harder than it looked.
"The exo-saturation concept," she said when I asked.
"The depletion question."
"They're the same question," she said. "Or the same question from different angles." She turned a page. "Ground doesn't deplete in the producing — we established that in July when Bai Yueran's observation arrived. But why it doesn't deplete: I'm working toward a claim about naming." She paused. "When a Ground names what it holds — puts it into explicit record — the named element is no longer being held internally. The holding capacity increases because the explicit is lighter than the implicit." She turned a page. "That's the depletion paper's claim in rough form. Not proved yet. Page 11."
