Three months since submission. Professor Chen: *Journal of Algebra moves faster than most topology journals. The reviewers are algebraists — they'll engage the algebra directly without needing to learn a new vocabulary. Six to nine months.*

*January or April,* I sent to Wanqing.

*Yes,* she said. *The eleventh spring, or the end of winter before it.*

I sent Wanqing's note to Professor Liang.

His reply: *Six to nine months is accurate for Journal of Algebra.* He paused. *The tenth paper's profile will be unusual for the journal — they publish algebraic mathematics, but they don't publish papers with phenomenological case studies and match records from competitive gaming. The algebraists who review it will be evaluating the algebra itself.* He paused. *Professor Chen's self-saturation algebra is new. It will either stand on its own terms or require significant revision.* He paused. *Professor Chen believes it stands. I've read the draft and I agree.*

"Published?"

"In review. He submitted in May. A philosophy journal — *Studies in History and Philosophy of Science.*" She turned a page. "He sent me the preprint. The paper's title: 'Knowledge From Within: The Epistemology of Practice-Based Research Series in Complex Adaptive Systems.'" She turned a page. "The paper uses our research series as the primary case study. His argument: practice-based research series produce a kind of knowledge that proposition-based research doesn't produce — they produce knowledge that is itself constituted by the practice it describes." She turned a page. "The research series knows formation depth from within formation depth. The knowledge is practice-constituted."

"What does that mean," I said.

"The papers know what they know because the people who wrote them were in the practice," she said. "The phenomenological accounts aren't just evidence — they're the medium through which the knowledge was formed. TwilightTide's floor-and-air account wasn't a description of something Wanqing then formalized. It was knowledge itself, in a different form." She turned a page. "Dr. Shen's claim: the mathematical knowledge in the papers and the phenomenological knowledge in the accounts are the same knowledge in two different forms. Neither is primary. Both are constitutive."

"The sixth composition and the ninth paper," I said.

"Yes," she said. "Two different forms of the same knowledge. Dr. Shen is saying that's not incidental to the research — it's what practice-based research series do. They produce knowledge in multiple forms simultaneously, and the forms are the same knowledge."

Both are constitutive."* She paused. *I've been knowing this from inside for eighteen years. The seventh composition's score is the same knowledge as the tenth paper's algebra in a different form. I didn't know how to say it. Dr. Shen said it.* She paused. *He found the words.*

Her reply: *"Both constitutive. Neither primary." That's the eleventh paper's starting point.* She paused. *The eleventh paper is about what the research series as a whole knows. Dr. Shen's answer: practice-constituted knowledge. What the series knows is constituted by the practice it grew from.* She paused. *The eleventh paper will use Dr. Shen's epistemological framework and the tenth paper's algebra to characterize the series itself.* She paused. *The research needing Dr. Shen to say what the research had been doing.*

Something Black Dragon and Iron Frost have been doing for years, independently developed from the documentation by three formations that never knew each other before the network.* She paused. *The documentation layer producing what it described. *Something like it,* she said. *Their joint session documentation is describing something they're calling "the overlap" — the space where the two formations' depths find each other.* She paused. *The overlap. TwilightTide would call it Ground meeting Ground. The composite-flow formation experienced it in Phase 3. These three formations are building the vocabulary from scratch.* She paused. *The vocabulary is the same vocabulary. They arrived at it without being told.* She paused. *The documentation compressed the time to get to joint sessions. The experience of joint sessions is irreducible.*

I forwarded Mu Qingyao's message to Chen Wei.

His reply: *The overlap. Three formations calling it the overlap, arriving at the vocabulary without knowing the vocabulary existed.* He paused. *That's the documentation layer doing what it was built to do. Not teaching the experience — providing the path to the experience. The path led them to joint sessions. The joint sessions produced the experience. The experience produced the vocabulary.* He paused. *Ground meeting Ground. They don't know they've discovered what the ninth paper describes. They're discovering it.*

His reply: *Their archive is in the shared query system. I'm watching it build.* He paused. *Their vocabulary: "the overlap." The query system shows the ninth paper's abstract in related documentation — if they search for "encounter" or "field," they'll find the ninth paper's description.* He paused. *They may or may not search. The overlap is what they're building. What the ninth paper calls it may or may not matter to them.* He paused. *The experience comes first. The characterization is always behind.*

The sessions are quieter than they've been in two years.* She paused. *Not that the sessions were noisy. The question running in the background had a quality — present, silent, working. Without it, the sessions are different. More open.* She paused. *The more open the background, the more the sessions are themselves. The quieter Ground, the more Ground is Ground.*

The self-saturation algebra's third claim: a self-saturating system's identity is most fully expressed when the system is not in the middle of active absorption. Ground is most itself between encounters. The sessions being quieter — not less, quieter — is Ground being most constituted.*

The most Ground the sessions have been.* She paused. *The seventh composition showed me what Ground is. The August sessions are showing me what Ground is like when it's not in the middle of showing.*

"October 8," she said. "The conservatory's main hall. Not the small hall — the main hall."

"How many seats," I said.

"Three hundred and twelve." She paused. "The sixth composition was forty-three. The seventh needs the main hall." She paused. "Not because the composition requires an audience. Because the composition requires the space. Sixty-one minutes of Ground being itself — the main hall has the right space for it."

"How many players," I said.

"Twenty-four," she said. "The largest ensemble of any composition. Twenty-four players for Ground." She paused. "Ground isn't one voice. Ground is — Ground is what contains. The twenty-four players are not representing Ground from the outside. They're constituting it. Twenty-four musicians constituting Ground."

"October 8," I said.

"Yes." She looked at the September bench. "Before the seventeenth autumn maple turns. The composition should be in the season when things are still fully themselves — before the turning." She paused. "Early October. The maple full but beginning. The composition before the beginning of the turn."

I thought about what that meant. The seventh composition was about Ground being fully constituted. Ground fully constituted before anything changed it — before the autumn deepened, before the competition tested it, before the next year began accumulating. The composition in the moment between being fully itself and beginning the next year's absorption.

I thought about the timing.

October 8: the seventh composition. October 1: CW XVIII registration. Seven days from registration to performance.

The CW beginning first. Then the composition. The competition would already be underway when the seventh composition was performed — the bracket established, the formation's position in the draw confirmed. The formation in its eighteenth year would be registered to compete before it performed the composition that described what it was.

That ordering felt right. The formation's existence in competition before the expression of the formation's existence. Being before saying.

"And CW XVIII registration," I said.

"October 1," she said. "The composition will be seven days after registration. The competition after the composition." She paused. "The composition will have happened before the competition begins. The floor will have been expressed before the competition tests it."

I sent TwilightTide's note to Chen Wei.

His reply: *The composition before the competition. The floor expressed and then tested.* He paused. *I've been watching the formation for thirteen years. The first CW I watched was CW IV — October 2016. The seventh composition will be performed before CW XVIII in 2032.* He paused. *Thirteen years of competition, now the competition following the composition. The work expressing itself before it's tested by what the work was built for.* He paused. *The order is right.*

Wanqing was writing in her notebook.

"The research series as Ground," she said. "What Dr. Shen is describing — the research series knows what it knows because it's constituted by the practice. The research series is self-saturating — eighteen years of practice entering the series, becoming part of it." She turned a page. "The seventh composition is the same claim in music. The seventh composition's second movement is Ground absorbing eighteen years. The research series absorbing eighteen years." She turned a page. "The seventh composition and the research series are the same kind of thing."

The same kind of thing.

I thought about what Wanqing had said.

The seventh composition was Ground absorbing eighteen years — the second movement's seventeen layers, each year entering the composition's Ground and making the composition more fully what it was. The research series had been doing the same thing with each paper. The crossover paper entered the series in 2015. The second paper entered in 2016. Each paper entering the series and the series becoming more fully what it was — more constituted, character unchanged.

The seventh composition and the research series were both self-saturating. The same algebra.

I forwarded Wanqing's note to Professor Chen.

Her reply: *The seventh composition and the research series as self-saturating systems.* She paused. *This is what the tenth paper formalizes. The composition is an instance of the algebra. The research series is an instance of the algebra.* She paused. *And the bench — the bench is an instance of the algebra too. The bench absorbing eighteen years of research and becoming more constituted as a bench.* She paused. *Three instances of the same algebraic structure: the formation, the research series, the bench. The structure is not peculiar to formations. It's a general property of systems that are built from true engagement over time.*
