30: Chapter Thirty — Hollowmere

He walked the last mile alone.

The coach road ended at the Vaelwood Junction, which was what the sign said, though no one who actually lived in this country called it that — it was the crossroads, the three-way split where the main coach road went on toward the bigger towns and two smaller tracks went off toward the smaller places that didn't have coach service. Hollowmere was off the west track, four miles and then one, and he had been walking it in this direction for the last hour with the bag over his shoulder and the trunk forwarded separately by coach porter and the summer evening coming in from the west in the particular way that summer evenings came in over flat farming country.

He had walked this same track in the opposite direction nine months and eleven days ago.

He knew the landmarks differently going this way. In September, heading north, the landmarks had been the receding things — the turn where he had looked back at the Hollowmere steeple for the last time, the ridge where the farm fields changed to road-shoulder grass, the first signpost that confirmed he was on the right road toward the city country. Going south, the landmarks arrived as revelations: the ridge first, then the specific smell of the creek that ran parallel to the track for half a mile before curving away, then the first view of the Hollowmere steeple over the stand of poplars at the track's bend.

He stopped at the bend and looked at the steeple.

It was the same as it had been. This was obvious; three months was not enough time for a steeple to change, and nine was not much better. He looked at it anyway. He thought: I have been in buildings with towers in them, buildings that were older than this village by two hundred years. He thought: this steeple is the steeple of the village I grew up in. He thought: both of these things are in the same world and I live in both parts of it, which is something I didn't fully understand in September.

He walked on.

The fields on either side were doing what late-June fields did: the barley on the west side had its height now, the pale early-gold of a good-sign summer, the rye on the east side still green and standing. The smell was different from the academy in a way that was not better or worse but simply fundamental — green and growing and the damp-sweetness of this specific country, the river-smell that came west from the Marrin valley. He had been breathing stone and chalk-dust and the mineral sharpness of runic channels for nine months. The difference registered in his chest before it reached his thinking mind. He breathed it in and kept walking.

The Marrin brook came first, which was right — the brook that ran through the low meadow east of the village, the one that Wynn used as her personal property boundary between the farm's north edge and the world-beyond-the-farm. He heard it before he saw it: the specific sound of the Marrin in late June, when it was running at half the spring level and the crossing stones were visible. He had swum in the Marrin at age seven and at age eleven and at age fifteen and had intended to stop at the brook in the ordinary course of a walk home, which was the instinct of a person who had a habit with a place.

He came around the last track-bend and saw the brook.

He also saw Wynn.

She was not at the crossing stones, which was where you stood if you were going across. She was upstream, in the shallow bend where the bank grassed over and the water ran clear over pebbles, the specific spot that was hers — he had known it for years, the place she went when she was thinking or bored or reading. She was knee-deep in the water, which was a classic Wynn situation, her shoes on the bank. She was looking at something in the pebbles. She had the look of total absorption she had when she had found a thing worth examining.

Then she looked up.

She saw him.

He had time to observe approximately one second of her expression — the sequence of recognition, disbelief-check, and confirmation — before she was moving. She came out of the brook in two fast steps, bare feet hitting the grass bank, and ran.

He dropped his bag.

He did not plan to drop it. It went from his shoulder to the ground in the specific way things went when the body made a decision before the mind had finished processing that a decision was available. He dropped it and she ran at him and he caught her — she was heavier than September, which was the right direction — both arms, the impact of a ten-year-old who had been running flat out for fifteen meters. He lifted her. She was saying something; he could not parse it yet because she was saying multiple things simultaneously, some of which were his name and some of which were news he was only catching fragments of.

He held on.

"—been waiting since the second bell they said the coach was late and I told Mam it wasn't late the coach from Vaelbridge Junction runs early in summer she said it was fine—"

He said: "It was fine." He said it into her hair, which smelled like brook-water and something herbal, which was the Hollowmere summer smell. He said: "I'm here."

She leaned back in his arms to look at him. She was doing the survey — the quick sharp look she used for the things she took seriously, the data-gathering, the same look he used, from the same source. She said: "You're taller."

He said: "I'm not."

She said: "You are. Or you're carrying yourself different." She squinted at him. She was ten and she read people the way their mother did. "You look — different. Not bad different."

He said: "Nine months."

She said: "I know how long nine months is." She looked at him with the expression she used when she thought he was underestimating her, which was the correct expression for when he underestimated her. "I've been writing letters to you for nine months. I know exactly how long it is." She said: "You look like someone who's been in trouble a lot and handled it."

He thought: that is possibly the most accurate assessment of the year anyone has given. He said: "Careful."

She said: "I'm right."

He said: "You're not wrong." He set her feet down on the bank — she was getting heavy, or he was less accustomed to the weight, or both — but kept hold of one hand, which she permitted, which she only permitted when she had decided to, which meant she had decided to. He picked up his bag with the other hand. He said: "Walk up with me."

She said: "Obviously." She had Mam's dryness and Da's loyalty and some combination of their practical intelligence and a mouth that had been completely her own from the moment she'd learned to use it. He had missed her for nine months without having the right word for what missing felt like when the person missed was an entity who was entirely their own.

He said: "How are you. Actually."

She said: "Good. Fully good. Healer said last month I was completely clear." She said it in the matter-of-fact way she said things that had frightened her when they were happening — the flat reporting of the past fact, the relief held in the matter-of-factness. "It was the apothecary treatment. Sixteen weeks and then a month more. It worked."

He said: "I know."

She said: "Mam told you."

He said: "Mam told me."

She was quiet for two steps, which was a notable quantity of quiet for Wynn. She said: "She wouldn't say who sent it. The apothecary package. She has a theory but she won't tell me the theory."

He said: "She's right not to."

Wynn looked at him with the squint again. She said: "You know."

He said: "Walk up with me."

She said: "That means you know." She accepted this with the specific acceptance she applied to information she intended to return to later. She filed it. Her attention shifted the way it did when she had decided something was a later-problem — immediate practical concerns reasserted themselves. She said: "Tell me about the school. Is it big."

He thought about how to answer this. He said: "The main building is the size of the village and the Calvert land together. There are outbuildings."

She said: "Do you have a room."

He said: "A room with a window and a desk and a shelf."

She said: "Can you see outside from it."

He said: "West courtyard. There's a birch grove."

She processed this with the seriousness she applied to architecture. She said: "Adequate." A pause. She said: "Did you make friends."

He thought about Lyra's one word at the east entrance. He thought about Mira's river-stone in his pocket and Doran on the coach south talking about the autumn festival. He said: "Yes."

She said: "What kind."

He said: "I'll tell you tonight."

She accepted this. They walked. She said: "Fine. Mam has something to show you. She won't tell me what it is until you're there."

He said: "All right."

She said: "It's on the kitchen table. She put a cloth over it." She said: "That means she's been thinking about the right way to show it to you."

He thought about this. He thought: something on the kitchen table, cloth-covered, Iselle waiting for him to arrive before showing it. He thought: it could be many things. He thought: an unsigned letter on a kitchen table, addressed in handwriting she doesn't recognize, was the kind of thing Iselle would put a cloth over and wait for the right moment.

He thought: I'm about to find out what comes next.

They came up the last rise of the track and over it, and Hollowmere was there — the arrangement of it, the village in its summer version, the herb gardens and the kitchen gardens and the Marrin forks visible past the east houses. The cottage was on the west side of the village, the north-facing aspect, the way his father had chosen when he built it for reasons that had made sense to him and that Kael had always assumed were about drainage.

Iselle was on the cottage step.

She was sitting on the step the way she sat when she was waiting — not the purposeful sit of someone mid-task, but the specific quality of someone who had arranged themselves to receive an arrival and had been patient about it. She was in her working clothes, the summer ones, the ones she wore for the rounds that kept the village from the ordinary medical events that villages generated. She had a shawl around her shoulders even in the June evening, which was the healer's habit — you were always more available to drafts than other people when you were moving between warm interiors and outdoor temperatures all day.

She looked at him.

He had been looking at her all the way across the grass, the last fifty meters, long enough to have read her face through several things: the careful patience of the waiting, the specific quality of the relief when she saw him and did not need to hide it, and under both of those, something he was reading with different eyes than the ones he'd had in September. He was reading it with the eyes of someone who knew what Ferris Cael was and what Hollowmere had meant to a man on the road, and what a woman who knew what he was had done for a ten-year-old in winter, and what forty years of knowing something you couldn't name had done to the shape of how she held things.

He thought: she knew.

He thought: she prepared me as best she could without being able to say the word, and then she put the herb pouch in the lining of my robe and she watched me walk up the road.

He came across the grass. Wynn ran ahead — she had the specific energy of a child who had been patient for a significant quantity of time and was now released from the patience, the burst of motion that exhausted-her would produce later but not yet. She went to the kitchen, which was where she went when she was finished being focused on an outside thing and wanted to be inside.

His father appeared in the doorway behind Iselle. Tomis. Wide hands, the particular set of him — not tall but wide, the wood-worker's build, the slowness that was not absence of thought but presence of it in a different form. He put one hand on Iselle's shoulder and stood there.

Neither of them said anything.

He thought: neither of them needs to. He thought: this is the language of the people he came from. He thought: they are standing there and he is walking toward them and that is the sentence.

He walked up to the step. He stopped.

Iselle looked at him for a moment. She stood and put her arms around him and held on, and he held on back, and he smelled the healer's herbs on her clothing and the kitchen-fire smell of her and the specific warmth of his mother which was not describable as anything except what it was. He thought: I have been in a school for nine months and I have been careful for nine months and I have been alone in the specific way you were alone when you were carrying something you couldn't put down. He thought: this is not that.

His father put one hand on his shoulder. Brief. The grip of someone who does not make extensive gestures and means the ones he makes exactly.

He said: "Good trip?"

He said: "Good trip."

His father nodded once. He went back inside.

Iselle stepped back and looked at him. Her eyes were steady — not wet, not the emotional performance of the occasion, but the real thing underneath, the careful looking of a woman who saw people clearly and was looking at her son clearly after nine months. She said: "You've been in something."

He said: "Yes."

She said: "I won't ask."

He said: "I know." He said: "There's things I want to tell you. Not tonight. This summer, when it's right."

She looked at him for a moment. She said: "There's a letter in the kitchen. On the table." She said it carefully, with the care she took with things she had been thinking about. "It came three weeks ago. It's addressed to you. I don't know the handwriting."

He said: "All right."

She looked at him. He held the look. He thought: she suspects she knows what it is. He thought: she has been waiting twenty years for something like this to arrive, in some form. He thought: she put a cloth over it and waited for me to get home.

He said: "We'll look at it."

She said: "Together." She said it as a statement, not a question.

He said: "Together."

She stepped aside. He went inside.

The kitchen was the kitchen — the same flagstone, the same south window, the same smell of cooking and herbs and the specific quality of a room that was used all day by people who knew where everything was. Wynn was at the table already, sitting with the pointed patience of a person who had been told about the cloth-covered item and was waiting to be present when it was revealed. She had the Marrin brook on her still-damp feet and a piece of bread in one hand and the sharpness of her attention directed at the item on the table like a focused lamp.

The letter was under a cloth. A piece of folded household linen, the kind Iselle used for everything practical, placed over a sealed envelope. He could see the edges of the envelope at the cloth's margin — ivory paper, not common, the weight of good quality stock.

He sat down.

Iselle sat across from him. His father stood in the kitchen doorway with a cup of something warm, not entering fully, which was his way of being present without claiming presence. He was there.

Kael put his hand in his inner pocket. He felt: the herb pouch, pressed warm against his ribs with the warmth of his body carrying it all day. The small tin of ash. Mira's river-stone, smooth and sure.

He thought: this is the pocket of a year.

He removed the cloth.

The envelope was addressed in a clean, careful hand — not a student's hand, not an official hand, not the particular slope of any handwriting he recognized. Ink that was good quality without being expensive. No return address. His name: *Kael Aldric Vance, Hollowmere.* Nothing else.

He broke the seal.

He unfolded the letter.

He read.

It was three paragraphs. He read all three. He read them again. He set the letter on the table and looked at it and thought about what it said, which was this: that there was a position available, in Castellune, beginning the following year, for a person of his particular skills and discretion. That the position was unpaid in coin but paid in access — to materials, to instruction, to a network of people who understood the thing he was and had decided that understanding it was more useful than the alternative. That no response was required; the position would be offered once and withdrawn if not claimed. That the person who had written the letter knew what he was, and knew his name, and had been watching him for some time, and believed, based on what they had watched, that he was the kind of person who would read this letter carefully and understand what it meant.

No signature. No sender.

He thought: the job offer that arrived the summer before Year 2. He thought: it was in the file Eilen had mentioned — the Reformist network, the people who knew what he was and had decided there was a use for what he was that was different from the Conclave's use. He thought: this is the second year beginning.

He looked up.

Wynn was looking at him. Iselle was looking at him. His father, in the doorway, was looking at his cup but had gone still.

He said: "I need to write a letter."

Iselle said: "Not tonight."

He thought about this. He thought: she is right. He thought: the letter has waited three weeks and the summer has all its months ahead and he has been careful for nine months and right now he is in the kitchen with the herb pouch warm against his ribs and his sister's bread-eating across the table from him and his mother's knowing look and his father's stillness in the doorway.

He said: "Not tonight."

He folded the letter. He put it in his inner pocket, with the herb pouch and the tin and the river-stone. He thought: they all fit.

Wynn said: "Are you going to tell us what it says."

He said: "Eventually."

She said: "That means soon?"

He said: "That means this summer, when it's time."

She looked at him with the assess-and-wait expression she had. She accepted this with the patience of someone who had been accepting his *eventually* for a decade and had learned it was reliable. She tore off another piece of bread. She said: "Good. Tell me about the school."

He said: "What do you want to know."

She said: "Everything. Start from September and don't leave anything out."

He looked at her. He looked at his mother, who was watching him with the specific expression of a woman who had prepared for this conversation and was ready to receive whatever version of it he gave. He looked at the doorway, where his father was standing with a cup and a quiet that held everything it needed to hold.

He thought: I am home. He thought: this is the right place for the year to end.

He said: "Right." He put his elbows on the table. "September. I arrived on the day of the Common Petition."

Later, when Wynn had been told to sleep and had gone upstairs with the particular protest-to-compliance arc that was characteristic, and his father had gone to bed with the farming household's early-morning schedule in his body, and the kitchen was quiet with the late-evening fire, Kael sat with his mother at the table.

She did not ask about the letter.

He said: "I know about Ferris Cael."

She was very still for a moment. Not frozen — she was never frozen — but the specific stillness of a person receiving a thing they have been carrying and set down. She said: "How."

He said: "Someone who was there. Forty years ago. She's been watching for me since the entrance exam."

Iselle looked at the fire for a moment. She said: "She let him go."

He said: "Yes."

She said: "He came here in the autumn. He was sick." She said it the way she said things she had carried for a long time — with the flatness of careful maintenance, the thing wrapped carefully so it didn't bleed. "He was here for three weeks. He was — he had the same quality you have. I recognized it when you were four, maybe five. The same specific thing." She said: "I didn't tell him about you. I didn't know you were going to have it then. But I recognized what he had."

He said: "You knew what it was called."

She said: "He told me the name. Article Fourteen. He told me the shape of it." She was quiet for a moment. "I wrote to his contacts after he left. They wrote back. I kept that correspondence for four years and then burned it when it became more dangerous to have it." She said: "I am sorry I did not tell you sooner."

He said: "You couldn't tell me before I could use it to protect myself."

She looked at him. The look had a quality he was seeing clearly for the first time — the look of someone who had been right to trust a judgment and was now receiving confirmation that the judgment was right, which was its own kind of weight. She said: "No. I couldn't."

He said: "You gave me the tools you could give without the words."

She said: "I tried." A pause. "Were they enough?"

She was quiet. She looked at him with the measuring look she used when she was deciding how much to say. She said: "The person who was there forty years ago. Is she trustworthy."

He thought about Eilen and the burned ash tin and the list she had kept for forty years and the commission she had resigned when there was something worth resigning for. He said: "Yes."

She said: "Good." She looked at the fire for a moment. Then she looked at him. "Kael. The letter. Whatever it is — be careful who you let yourself be useful to. Being useful can become a kind of chain."

He said: "I know." He thought: he was already being careful about exactly that. He thought: she was not wrong, and this was not new information, and she was still right to say it.

She nodded once. She let it be.

She said: "Were they enough?"

He thought about nine months. He thought about the year. He thought about the specific precise form of enough that it had been. He said: "Yes."

She looked at the fire. The kitchen held the late-evening quiet that was its own kind of sound. Outside, the Hollowmere night was doing the things the Hollowmere night did: frogs at the Marrin, the north wind in the poplars, the distant sound of the Calvert farm's night-complaint from the east edge of the village.

He said: "I'm going to be all right."

She said: "I know." She said it without question. She had been carrying the knowing for twenty years and she had moved it into the present tense without hesitation. "I know you are."

He put his hand in his pocket and felt the herb pouch against his ribs. Warm — always warm, the warmth of being carried close for nine months. The warmth of Hollowmere and the warmth of the year and the warmth of the thing that was the same in both places, the thing that had been here before he left and was still here and would be here when he came back again.

He was home.

The letter was in his pocket.

The second year was waiting.
