# Chapter Eleven — The Forest Walk
Professor Helene Marrow had been teaching Botany at Argent Vale for eleven years, and the field trip was not a field trip. She was clear about this at the start.
"A field trip," she said, standing at the eastern gate with two dozen students in coats, "implies a departure from the real work of the classroom. What we are doing today is the real work. The classroom is a preparation for this. The specimens in the glass cases are preparations for this. The drawings in your textbooks are what the people who came before you saw, so that you would have a framework when you came here and saw the real thing." She looked at them with the specific attention of someone who had been saying true things for eleven years and had not run out of them yet. "The real thing is always more than the drawing. Remember that."
The students filed through the gate. He noticed that she counted them as they went, which was the automatic habit of someone who was responsible for people returning from a thing as well as going to it. She used her fingers to count rather than a register, each student passing marked with a subtle fold, which was the method of someone who had done this enough times that the formal version had been replaced by the version that actually worked. She had the easy alertness of someone who tracked rooms without appearing to track them, which he had been watching her do in class since the first day. She noticed when a student was present but not engaged; she noticed when someone understood something for the first time; she noticed when the energy of the room was right for an unexpected question and delivered the question at exactly that moment. He thought: she teaches the way she walks in the forest — attentive to everything without making the attention visible.
He had already been admiring her teaching for six weeks. The lecture on the primary source documents had been the first evidence of a mind that used material differently from how it was supposed to be used — not as content to transmit but as argument to conduct. The subsequent lectures had confirmed this. She had a habit of stopping mid-sentence to ask what the silence meant, which was disconcerting the first time and addictive after that. She also had a habit of answering questions with questions, which was a teaching style that some students found frustrating and which he found clarifying, because the question she asked back was never random — it was always the question that led you most directly to the answer you were actually looking for, if you were willing to do the thinking.
He had mentioned this to Wen, who had said, with the mild pride of a nephew: "She's been doing that since I was small. She thinks the silences are where the thinking is."
He believed this.

The forest east of the gate was not a managed grove. He had been expecting something organized — marked paths, labeled specimens, the forest as an outdoor extension of the classroom. What he got was the actual forest: mixed broadleaf and needle, understorey dense with autumn fern and the last of the season's growth before the cold, animal paths through the undergrowth that were visible if you knew how to look. He knew how to look. Hollowmere's eastern wood had not been managed either, and he had spent the better part of his childhood in it.
He noticed that he was one of approximately four students in the group who showed no discomfort at the density. The noble-admission students moved with the careful uncertainty of people who had grown up around forests in the way of people who had grown up around forests as estates — maintained, visible, legible. This forest was not legible in the same way. It had not been organized for them.
Marrow noticed who moved comfortably. He saw her see it. She filed it.
She kept walking as she talked, which meant the students had to keep up rather than standing in a circle to receive instruction, which meant the instruction had a quality of discovery rather than lecture — you learned the thing as you were already encountering the thing, which was, he thought, the entire point. She stopped at a point where the path had split into two animal tracks, showed them how to read the split — which way the animal traffic went, how recently, what the track depth said about the animal's weight — and then led them left, which was the track with more recent use.
He had known this and had not said it, partly because he was learning the school's social rhythms for knowledge-display and partly because she had asked the group and it was more interesting to see who else knew. No one else spoke. One student — Franna Lowmere, who was in this section — looked at the tracks with the concentrated attention of someone applying a new framework to a thing they had not previously categorized. He thought: that's the look. That's what Marrow is trying to produce.
Later, at the silverash stand, she did the same thing: asked first, answered second, made the answer do more work than a direct explanation would have. He thought: she is teaching at two levels simultaneously. The content is the botany. The structure is how to observe. He thought: I came to this field trip expecting botany. She is teaching me how to pay attention.
He was, already, going to think about that for a while.
She stopped the group at a stand of grey-barked trees with the specific roughness of specimen worth discussing. "Silverash," she said. "Growing here because the drainage is correct and the light is correct, for a value of correct that silverash has decided is correct, which may not be the value you would have assigned it." She touched the bark. "This is an old tree. Not ancient — five hundred years would be ancient, and this is perhaps two hundred — but old enough that everything in its vicinity has adapted to being in its vicinity." She looked at the students. "What does that mean, practically? Who can tell me what species are growing within three feet of this trunk, and why?"
He looked. He could see, within arm's reach of the trunk: a mat of low-growing copper moss, the kind that preferred alkaline soil; a bracket fungus on the north side where the moisture collected; and a clump of shade-tolerant fern with the particular coloring of plants that had learned to use whatever light reached them rather than requiring more. He knew this from Hollowmere, not from the textbook, but the textbook had given him the vocabulary for what he already knew.
He said, quietly, to no one in particular: "Copper moss — alkaline run-off from the bark. Bracket fungus — north-facing, moisture-collecting. Fern — shade tolerant, adapted to the tree's canopy."
Marrow heard him. She had very good ears.
"Correct," she said, without making it a performance. "The correct answer, which this person—" she gestured at him without looking, which was the gesture of someone who was including rather than spotlighting, "—has just given, tells us that the tree has been changing its environment for long enough that other species have organized themselves around it. The tree is not just a tree. It is an argument for a particular version of this soil and this light and this moisture, and everything nearby has answered the argument." She looked at the group. "This is what old things do. They make arguments. The older the thing, the more the environment has answered."
He thought about the Throneless King behind his sealed wall, making arguments for five hundred years. He thought about the Wall as a long answer to an old argument. He put this away because it was not relevant to the botany exercise and he was trying to pay attention.

The pairing for the specimen-collection exercise was assigned by Marrow rather than chosen, which was her stated preference: "Left to yourselves, you will pair with your friends and learn from your friends, which is useful but limited. I am pairing you with people who see the forest differently from you, which will be inconvenient and more educational."
He was paired with Lyra Veyrien.
He looked at the pairing list. He thought: Marrow had been watching the group for six weeks and had assigned these pairings deliberately and understood what she was doing. He thought: I am not going to ask whether this was deliberate because asking would confirm that I noticed.
He also noted the other pairings, quickly, in the way of someone who assessed rooms: Mira Sablewood was paired with a noble-admission Korrith student, which would be interesting; Renn Voss was paired with a Sablewood student he didn't know; Franna was paired with the quietest student in the section, which was either Marrow's attempt to give Franna a listener or to give the quiet student a reason to speak.
Lyra looked at the list. She looked at him. She did not say anything. Neither did he.
They took their specimen collection pouches and their field notebooks and walked in the direction Marrow had indicated for their assigned quadrant — eastern section, where the ground sloped toward a natural spring that Marrow had told them was a point of interest.
He noticed, walking beside her for the first time, that she moved through the forest with a more practiced ease than the other noble-admission students. Not the ease of Hollowmere-childhood, not the casual familiarity of someone who had used a forest for work — but something similar in outcome if different in origin. She had been taught to move quietly, he thought. Someone had taught her how to walk without announcing herself.
He thought: the Veyrien estate is adjacent to old-growth forest. The family has been in the east of the southern region for four hundred years. Of course she knows how to walk in a forest. He thought: I keep expecting her to be less capable than she is, which is an error in my model that I need to correct. He corrected it.

They walked for fifteen minutes in near-silence, which was a specific kind of near-silence: not the comfortable silence of people who were easy in each other's company, but the managed silence of two people who had made a calculation that speaking was more complicated than not speaking and had arrived at the same calculation independently.
He collected specimens methodically — Marrow had given them a list of six things to identify in their assigned quadrant, and he had a working knowledge of four of them from Hollowmere and was using the field guide for the other two. The eastern section of the forest had a different character from the main section: denser understorey, more moisture, the specific smell of places where water was close to the surface. He could feel the grade of the slope beneath his feet — not steep, but consistent enough to tell him which direction the water ran and, by extension, where the spring was likely to be.
She collected specimens with a different method — more deliberate, more closely referenced to the field guide, which she had brought rather than relying on prior knowledge. He noticed that her identifications were more accurate than his on two of the six items, because she was looking at the guide and he was working from memory, and his memory on those two items was slightly imprecise. He filed this without embarrassment. Accurate was better than confident.
He crouched to examine a section of the forest floor where the leaf litter had been disturbed in a pattern suggesting animal activity, and noted it in his field book, and when he looked up Lyra Veyrien was standing two feet away looking at the same disturbance.
"Deer," he said.
She looked at him.
"The pattern," he said. "The way the litter's been scraped. Deer use their feet to clear feeding grounds. You can tell it's not a smaller animal because the area disturbed is too large and the depth is consistent."
She looked at the disturbed area. She looked at her field notebook. She checked the guide. She wrote something.
"The guide says the same thing," she said.
"Good," he said.
A pause. Not quite the managed silence — slightly different. The kind of pause where something has been said that both parties found adequate.
"You grew up in woodland," she said. It was not a question.
"Adjacent to it," he said. "Hollowmere's east of the village opens into forest. We used it."
"For what?"
He considered how to answer this honestly. "Firewood," he said. "Game, sometimes, when the hunting was good. Building material. I used to go there because it was quiet and the view from the top of the ridge was worth the walk."
She wrote this down, which surprised him. He thought: she is taking notes on me. He thought: she has been doing this for as long as I've been doing it to her. He thought: of course she has.
He stood and walked toward the spring.

The spring was where the map had said it would be, in a small clearing where the canopy opened enough to let in actual light and the ground was softer underfoot, and it was worth the walk: a clean seep coming out of the hillside through a shelf of grey stone, cold and clear, feeding a small pool before it ran away underground. The pool had the specific quality of undisturbed water — a surface so still you could see the bottom in the center and the reflection of the sky at the edges. The clearing smelled different from the forest they had walked through to reach it: less leaf-rot, more mineral, the cold clean smell of water that had come up from depth. He stood at the pool edge and looked down and could see the small stones on the bottom shifting very slightly where the seep entered, moved by the pressure of the water coming through. Nothing dramatic. Just the constant, patient rearrangement of things by the thing that moved through them.
He was making notes about the water plants — three species at the spring edge that he identified correctly — and she was drawing one of them, which she did quickly and with the precision of someone who had been taught to draw as a basic skill rather than an artistic one. The drawing was accurate in the way that drawings made for recording purposes were accurate: not beautiful, exactly, but true to the thing.
He watched her draw for a moment and thought: she is good at the things she has been taught. He thought: the things she has been taught are a significant list. He thought: she has been prepared for this school in ways that I was not, and the ways she was prepared have made her genuinely capable, which is worth noting separately from the fact of the preparation.
He was finding the forest east of the gate more interesting than he had expected. Marrow had been right: the specimens in the classroom were preparations, and the thing they prepared you for was noticeably more than the preparation. The spring was cold on his fingers when he cupped a small amount to smell it — faint mineral note, the aquifer character — and the forest around it had the specific quality of a place that had been here for a long time and intended to remain so. He thought about what Marrow had said: old things make arguments. He thought: this spring is an argument for a particular version of this hillside, and it has been making that argument for longer than the school has existed.
He liked this forest. He was going to come back.
He was making notes about the water plants when Lyra said, from behind him: "Which way back?"
He turned. She was standing at the clearing's edge, looking at the way they had come. The forest in mid-afternoon was dimmer than he'd expected — the canopy had closed behind them more thoroughly than was obvious while walking through it, and the light that reached the ground was the particular grey of autumn afternoon under leaves, which made every direction look equally like every other direction if you hadn't been paying attention.
He looked at the light. He looked at the angle of the shadows. He looked at the carpet of fallen leaves on the ground, which showed a faint depression where they had walked.
"I think we went slightly north of where we should have," he said. "We were supposed to stay east of the spring. We're south of east."
"So we need to go north," she said.
"And east," he said. "I think."
A pause.
"You think," she said.
"I'm fairly confident," he said, which was honest: he was fairly confident, which was not the same as certain, and he thought she deserved the honest qualifier rather than the confident version of it.
She looked at the forest. She looked at him. She turned north.

The ankle happened twenty minutes later, on a slope where the leaves hid a root he had not seen and she had not seen either. He heard the sound before he heard her — a sharp intake of breath, the kind that means something has gone wrong that isn't going to be ignored regardless of preference — and turned in time to see her sitting on the ground with one hand around her right ankle and an expression of concentrated, controlled fury directed at the root.
"How bad?" he said.
"Twisted," she said. "Not broken." She said both of these with the precision of someone who had assessed the situation quickly and accurately and was reporting results rather than expressing distress. Then, after a half-second: "I can tell the difference. I've done this before."
He thought: yes, you probably have. He said: "Can you walk on it?"
She stood. Or tried to. She put weight on it, controlled, with the expression of someone who had decided to find out rather than assume, and the expression changed in a way that was not subtle if you were watching her face, which he was. She sat back down.
"Possibly not immediately," she said.
He looked at the forest. He looked at the angle of light, which had shifted another ten degrees while they'd been walking. He looked at Lyra Veyrien, who was sitting on the leaf-covered ground with her back very straight and an expression of fierce composure that suggested she was using a significant amount of energy to maintain the composure. He thought: she is furious at the root. Not at the situation, not at herself, not at him — specifically at the root, which had been there and was the direct cause of the problem, and which she could not argue with.
"I can carry you back," he said.
She looked at him.
"Or I can leave you here and get help," he said. "But that adds forty minutes minimum, and it's going to be dark in an hour."
She did not say anything for approximately four seconds, which was the length of time it took someone to do the arithmetic and arrive at the same conclusion he had arrived at. "Fine," she said. Then, as a separate statement: "I'm not injured in any way that makes this undignified."
He thought: she is telling me how to think about this. He thought: that's fair enough. "Of course not," he said.
He crouched. She put her arm around his shoulders. He stood.
She was lighter than he'd expected, which was not a useful thing to think but was a thing he noticed anyway. He had been carrying things since he was eight years old — feed sacks, hay bales, the particular weight of a bucket of water at arm's length — and she was straightforwardly lighter than all of those things, which recalibrated his expectation. He adjusted his grip. She adjusted her hold. It was a briefly awkward negotiation and then it was stable.
He walked north-east.
The forest was harder to navigate carrying a person, not because of the weight — he had accounted for the weight — but because every decision about where to put his feet became a decision about where to put both of them, and the calculation required a wider margin of error. He watched the ground ahead as far as the light allowed and picked his path with three steps' preview rather than one. The route he chose was not the most direct but it was the safest, and safest was correct.
She did not say anything. He did not say anything. The forest was quiet in the specific way of forests when you're moving through them and listening: birds somewhere to the left, wind in the canopy above, the soft sound of leaf-litter underfoot. He was paying attention to the ground because she was not touching it and he was responsible for both of them navigating it. He was paying attention to the direction because it was easy to drift in dense forest and he was carrying an extra person and could not afford drift. He was paying attention to the light because the light was changing.
She was heavier after the first ten minutes, which was not a change in her weight but a change in his arms, which were doing something they had not been asked to do in some time — sustained load-carrying in uneven terrain — and he noted the change as a physical fact and adjusted his grip and kept walking. His pack was still on his back. He had shifted her to distribute the load as best he could.
She was bearing it with a stillness that he found, privately, impressive. Not the stillness of someone who was fine, but the stillness of someone who had decided not to be a burden and was putting real effort into the decision. Her arm around his shoulders was precisely positioned — neither clinging nor awkward, the careful placement of someone who was thinking about where her weight was.
He navigated around a section of dense undergrowth by going slightly uphill and around it, which was longer but avoided the root-risk of the densely vegetated floor. She did not question this. She looked where they were going and occasionally said "left" or "right" when she could see something on the ground ahead that he might not see from his angle, which was useful and which he acknowledged with a brief nod.
He was aware, at some point, that he could smell her hair, which was close to his face because of the angle she was carried at and the wind direction. It was a specific smell — something with warmth in it, not a perfume exactly, more the kind of scent that came from whatever soap or oil someone had used that morning and which had spent the day becoming their own. He noted this. He did not do anything with it. He focused on the ground.
The gate appeared through the treeline ten minutes later, which was either luck or his directional sense was more reliable than he'd thought. He walked through it. Marrow was on the path, counting heads, and looked up when he came through carrying Lyra with the specific expression of someone who had been in the situation of teacher responsible for a student going wrong enough times to have a protocol for it.
"Ankle?" Marrow said.
"Twisted," Lyra said, from his shoulder.
"The infirmary is straight ahead." She had already moved on to the next student, which was the quality of someone managing multiple situations simultaneously without losing any of them. "Vance — you'll take her."
"Yes," he said.

At the infirmary, they told him she could manage the last twenty feet on her own, which she did — stood, tested the ankle carefully, nodded once to herself, walked the twenty feet with a controlled limp that showed more effort than she was displaying. He stood outside and looked at the darkening sky and thought about the forest and the spring and the specific angle of the afternoon light that had told him north-east.
He thought: she said exactly what she needed to say and nothing more. During the twenty-minute carry she had said "left" three times, "right" twice, and once "there's a root" when she saw something he hadn't. She had not apologized for being carried. She had not made conversation. She had not thanked him until they were at the infirmary door, at which point she said, once, quietly: "Thank you, Vance." And then: "You know the forest."
He had said, "I grew up next to one."
She had looked at him for a moment with an expression he could not quite read — something that was not quite the hostile-distance expression and not quite anything else he had a name for — and then she had gone inside.
He thought: that was the most she had said to him since the queue at the Common Petition gate. He thought: she said it without performing gratitude or diminishing it. He thought: for a person who had spent three months treating him as a furniture-level presence in her house, she was surprisingly graceful at saying thank you when she had to say it.
He thought: it was the first time she had said his name. She had said it at the door: *Thank you, Vance.* Which was not warm. But it was a name. He had been "the coin-boy" in his own head since the queue, which was how he'd started thinking of himself in the context of Lyra Veyrien, and now he was Vance, which was a different category.
He walked back to Hall Veyrien slowly, taking a different route that went past the lake. The lake was the color of the sky in autumn — grey-blue, moving slightly, real. He stood at the shore for a few minutes and looked at it and thought about the forest and the spring and the feeling of navigating by light angle and slope and the direction of drainage.
He thought: she wrote down what he said about the forest. Firewood, game, the ridge view. She was taking notes on him the same way he was taking notes on her, which was exactly what he should have expected and had not quite expected. He thought: she is more thorough than I have been giving her credit for. He thought: she has been thorough about him from the start, and the eighteen inches of distance was not avoidance but management, which were different things.
He thought about this for a while standing at the lakeshore and did not arrive at anything useful.
He walked back and wrote his field notes — the silverash, the deer clearing, the spring, the water plants — and added his personal notes: *the forest east of the gate, autumn, afternoon. Leaf depth approximately four inches. Water at the spring: cold, clean, probably fed by the hill aquifer. Marrow pairs students deliberately. Marrow teaches at two levels: content and method. Silverash makes arguments. The real thing is always more than the drawing.* He paused and added one more line in the margin, which did not fit into the formal field-note categories: *L.V. reads the ground. Calls out roots ahead. Knows to say left when she sees something you can't.*
He did not write anything about the smell of Lyra Veyrien's hair, which was a thing he had noticed and was continuing to not do anything with, because doing something with it was not an option available to him and noting it was sufficient and noting it in a permanent document was counterproductive.
He thought: the forest was good. He would go back.
He thought about what Marrow had said: the real thing is always more than the drawing. He thought: this was true of the forest. He thought: it was probably true of a number of other things he had formed drawings of in his head before encountering the real thing. He thought: Lyra Veyrien had been a drawing in his head since the Common Petition queue — the cold, dismissive, entitled representative of a system that did not want him here — and the real thing had been taking the drawing apart, detail by detail, for three months, and today had taken apart another piece of it.
He thought: the drawing is not useless. The drawing is the framework you need to have before you can see the real thing. But you have to be willing to let the real thing be more than the drawing. He thought about the grove of silverash and the bracket fungus on the north-facing side and the copper moss arranged around the roots in its alkaline preference, all of it arranged around the argument the tree had been making for two centuries. He thought: old things make arguments and everything nearby answers. He thought: he had been in this school for three months and was only beginning to understand what argument it was making. He thought: probably he would understand it better by letting it make the argument rather than trying to predict what the argument was.
He sent his field notes to Marrow's submission board and did his Runecraft practice and went to bed, and the evening was ordinary and fine. The window in his room looked north rather than east, so he could not see the forest from his cot. He thought about the spring anyway, the way the small stones shifted on the bottom where the water came through, and he was not thinking about anything in particular when he fell asleep.
