66: The Return Home
The Su clan's traveling party left the royal city on the morning of the third day after the closing ceremony.
Su Yan rode in the second carriage, with his left arm in the clean white sling and *Ledger* sheathed at his belt. Linglong rode beside him. Aluan and Cousin Su Lin rode in the third carriage. The patriarch and Su Hong rode in the first.
The road back to Cloud Sky City took five days. The road, this time, was different.
It was different because — at every village, every market town, every relay post they passed — the kingdom of Beicang had heard.
The news had traveled by the standing diplomatic courier line in two days. By the third, the eighth district of Cloud Sky City had received the Tournament's results. By the fifth, every farmstead and every cooper's shop on the road north had read the public scrolls posted at the village squares.
The traveling party stopped at noon of the third day at a small relay inn on the central plain.
The innkeeper — a stout woman of forty who had served the household twice before — stepped out into the inn's front yard and bowed all the way to the dusty stones.
She did not, when she straightened, allow herself to look at Su Yan directly.
"Young Master." Her voice was careful. "The kingdom has read the news. The kingdom has, by some small private accident of the past three days, *changed*.
