51: The First Snow
The first snow of the kingdom of Beicang's winter fell on the eighth district of Cloud Sky City at the second hour past dawn on the fifty-second day after the cellar's opening.
It fell quietly. There was no wind. The flakes came down in the slow patient pattern of a sky that had been deciding, for two weeks, exactly when to let the first cold weather through, and had — by some careful unhurried agreement of its own — decided this morning was the morning.
Su Yan stood on the porch of his mother's old writing room and watched it fall.
Linglong stood beside him. She had — in the past two weeks — finished her growth into the small careful body of a young wood-spirit at the apparent age of eight. By her people's count she was now sixteen. The change had happened slowly enough that the household had registered it, by Cousin Su Lin's standing arrangement, as the small ordinary growth of a young clan guest.
She inclined her head, very slightly, toward the falling snow.
"Sister-brother," she said, in her small even voice. "The eastern slope's substrate registers the first snow this morning also. I felt it when I woke."
"Linglong."
"The forest is — by the careful read of my own substrate — *holding* the small new tree-mother under the snow. She will, by my read, *not* be in danger this winter. The eastern slope's substrate will, by the small precise old courtesy of two centuries of jade-spirit work, *carry* her through her first season."
Su Yan inclined his head.
The new tree — the one growing on the foundation platform of the Mirror — was, by the platform's accelerated time, *one inside-year and three months* old. By the platform's calibration she was the height of a man and a hand, with the small clean unhurried second-tier crown her grandmother had been calibrated for at the same age.
Linglong, who had been visiting the platform with him every inside-night for ten weeks, was — by the small careful unhurried sister-bond's quiet courtesy — *the new tree's older sister*.
She did not, by any of her small careful unhurried bookkeeping, name the tree.
She had, by her tree-mother's preceding teaching, been told that *young trees were not named until their seventh tier of crown was complete*. Naming before the seventh tier was, by the small old unhurried courtesy of her people, *a small careful unhurried disrespect*. The new tree would, by the platform's accelerated calibration, complete her seventh tier in approximately three more outside years.
The naming would, by the small careful unhurried calibration of three years, *wait*.
Su Yan watched the snow.
He inhaled, slowly. He let the inhalation finish.
"Linglong."
"Yes, sister-brother."
"I have been — for the past two weeks, since the Tournament announcement — recalibrating the small private bookkeeping of the next four months. I would, by my own preference, like to share the recalibration with you and Aluan-jie this morning at the writing table. Will you, by your own preference, attend."
Linglong inclined her head — small, formal.
"Yes, sister-brother."
She turned at her unhurried pace and went, by her small clean morning gait, into the writing room.
---
Aluan was already at the writing table. She had — by the careful unhurried courtesy of three months of standing arrangement — been arriving at the writing room at the second hour past dawn each morning, with the small ordinary household tray of fresh hot water for the morning's tea-pot. She had become, by the careful unhurried calibration of those three months, the eastern wing's *first attendant of the writing room*. The household had filed her, by the small ordinary courtesy, as Su Yan's senior personal serving-girl.
She looked up as Su Yan slid the lattice closed.
He inclined his head. Linglong inclined hers. The three of them sat at the writing table — Su Yan at the head, Aluan and Linglong opposite each other on the cushions to his left and right — in the small clean lantern-light of the writing room's morning.
"Honored people." Su Yan's voice was low. "The Royal Tournament is in the fifth moon of the spring. By the careful unhurried calibration of the kingdom's standing arrangement, that is a hundred and eight days from this morning. I have, in the past two weeks, recalibrated my preceding two-year plan to accommodate the careful unhurried preparation the Tournament requires."
He laid, on the writing table, a clean half-sheet of plain rice paper with three small careful columns in his own private hand.
"The recalibration," he said, "is in three parts.
"First. *Cultivation*. I will, by the careful unhurried calibration of the next hundred and eight days' inside-night training, push my undisplayed cultivation from the present Qi Condensation Stage Six to *Foundation Establishment Mid*. This is the cultivation level the Tournament's instruments — the Royal Body Resonance Stone for body, the Royal Spirit Root Pillar for spirit, and the *Royal Foundation Resonance Lattice* for foundation cultivation — will, by the careful unhurried calibration of the kingdom's reading, register me at. Foundation Establishment Mid is — by the careful unhurried calibration of the kingdom's noble youth — *a respectable result for a sixteen-year-old prodigy nine months after a Heaven Spirit Root certification*. It will not, by the kingdom's careful unhurried reading, *exceed expectations*. It will, however, *meet* them in a way that does not, by the careful unhurried calibration of the king's standing courtesy, embarrass the Crown's preceding protection of the household.
"Second. *Faction*. I will, by the careful unhurried calibration of the next hundred and eight days, expand the *Voiceless Inheritance* from the present seventeen members to a *targeted thirty-five*, with the careful unhurried preceding work calibrated to make the expansion *invisible to the household's standing intelligence-line*. The targeted thirty-five will be drawn from three small careful unhurried sources — the seven remaining names on Mother's hidden list of allies in this kingdom; eight further careful unhurried names Cousin Su Lin's notebook has identified, in the past three months, as *displaceable from their current household allegiances by small careful unhurried preceding mutual benefit*; and three small careful unhurried recruits per branch (interior, external, combat) that Aluan-jie, Cousin Su Lin, and Master Mu will, by their own preceding work, identify and bring to my attention.
"Third. *The Tournament itself*. I will, by the careful unhurried calibration of the next hundred and eight days, build a small private *strategic file* on the seven other major prodigies of the kingdom's noble youth and the four foreign honored guests Cousin Su Lin's standing intelligence has — by the careful unhurried courtesy of the kingdom's standing diplomatic exchange — identified as confirmed attendees. The file will, by my preference, contain — for each prodigy and each foreign guest — *substrate calibration*, *training lineage*, *known fighting style*, *known weaknesses*, *known allegiances*, and *the careful unhurried estimate of the strategic value of each confrontation*. The file will, by my preference, *also* contain the careful unhurried calibration of *which confrontations I prefer to win, which I prefer to draw, and which I prefer to politely lose*. The Tournament will, by the careful unhurried calibration of the kingdom's standing arrangement, be — *not* a contest I plan to dominate. It will be, by my preference, *a calibrated public reading of myself that the kingdom of Beicang and its visiting foreign guests will, by their own bookkeeping, file* as the small careful unhurried portrait I have, by my own preference, decided they should file."
He paused.
"Are there questions."
Aluan signed: *The eight displaceables. Have you read Su Lin's notebook entries on them.*
"I have. Cousin Su Lin and I will conduct the careful unhurried preceding mutual-benefit conversations across the next month. By my preference, I would like you to attend the first three — to read the displaceables in person. Your read of a stranger's small careful unhurried allegiance is, by the careful read of my own bookkeeping, more accurate per minute than mine. Will you, by your own preference, attend."
Aluan signed: *Yes.*
Linglong inclined her head.
"Sister-brother. The strategic file on the prodigies — by my own careful unhurried preference, I would like to *conduct the substrate readings*. I have not been to a noble banquet. I would, by my own preference, *attend* the next three banquets the household will be invited to in the next two months, in the small careful unhurried courtesy of a young clan guest, and *read* the substrates of the noble youth I see in passing. The file will, by my read, gain in accuracy."
Su Yan inclined his head.
"Cousin Su Lin will arrange the invitations through the patriarch's chief steward. You will attend the first banquet ten days from now."
Linglong inclined her head.
The morning's small careful unhurried planning closed.
---
Over the next twelve weeks, the careful unhurried calibration of the three-part plan ran by the small precise hour of its bookkeeping.
Su Yan's inside-night cultivation pushed by the careful unhurried small private discipline that Master Mu and his mother's seven cultivation-theory books had, between them, calibrated for him. By the end of the fourth week he had reached *Qi Condensation Stage Nine — late*. By the end of the seventh, *Foundation Establishment Early*. By the tenth, *Foundation Establishment Mid*. The body — by the careful unhurried calibration of the substrate-foundation his mother had built — *carried* the cultivation cleanly. The Royal-grade reading would, by his careful estimate, register him at *Foundation Establishment Mid* with no further small careful unhurried adjustment required.
Cousin Su Lin's notebook expanded by perhaps two hundred pages over the same twelve weeks. The eight displaceables were, by the careful unhurried calibration of the small careful unhurried preceding mutual-benefit conversations, *recruited*. Six accepted full membership. Two accepted associate-tier membership — that is, careful unhurried independent agents who would, by their own careful unhurried preceding bookkeeping, support the Voiceless Inheritance's small careful unhurried operations without formal membership. Master Mu identified, by his preceding sword-yard work, three young swordsmen of the eighth district whose small careful unhurried allegiances had, by Master Mu's read, been *quietly displaced* from the household's standing and were *open to small careful unhurried alternative arrangement*. They were brought in through Hua Lin's combat branch.
Linglong attended six banquets over the twelve weeks, accompanied — by Cousin Su Lin's careful unhurried preceding paperwork — by an elderly senior clansman of the third branch whom the household had assigned, by ordinary custom, as her chaperone. The chaperone — Old Cousin Su Wenli, the thin small one who had spoken at Su Yan's expulsion ceremony in support of the Stone test — was, by Cousin Su Lin's read, *quiet*. He did not press Linglong. He sat at her side at the banquets, drank his tea, and exchanged small careful unhurried courtesies with the senior matriarchs. Linglong, at his side, *read* the noble youth's substrates in small careful unhurried passing and reported each, by quiet evening conversation in the side garden, to Su Yan.
Princess Cang Xueyi's small private letters continued. The cadence remained two-week. The careful unhurried column-keeping, by the small precise unhurried calibration of two scholars in two private studies, *deepened*. By the end of the twelfth week, Su Yan had — by his own preference, by Cousin Su Lin's standing arrangement — *visited* the princess's writing room *twice more*, by the careful unhurried courtesy of the unmarked courier-line escort. Each visit had been a small careful unhurried meal. Each had ended, by the careful unhurried mutual courtesy, *not* with a kiss; *not* with the careful unhurried small private exchange of any token; but with the careful unhurried mutual closing of the meal's third cup of tea and a small precise unhurried exchange of *one careful unhurried bow apiece*.
The bow had — by both their preferences — *deepened* by half a degree at each meal.
By the small careful unhurried calibration of the third meal, the bow was — by the careful unhurried discipline of the kingdom of Beicang's small careful unhurried etiquette — *the small precise unhurried bow of two young people who had, by their own preceding mutual courtesy, decided that the careful unhurried mutual file they were exchanging was no longer two columns but one — though neither, by their own preceding bookkeeping, would name it that for at least another six months*.
By the careful unhurried calibration of the eleventh week, the household's chief steward delivered, by the patriarch's small careful unhurried preceding standing arrangement, a single small folded slip of pale-cream paper to the eastern wing's lattice door.
The slip read: *The Crown Prince Han Yifeng of the kingdom of Eastern Yan is, by the careful unhurried courtesy of the kingdom's standing diplomatic exchange, en route to the Royal Tournament. He has, by his own preceding preference, requested a small careful unhurried courtesy visit at the Su clan's compound, on his way to the royal city, on the eighteenth day of the second month of the spring. The household has — by my standing arrangement and the king's standing arrangement, and at your discretion — *not yet* replied. Reply at your preference. — Patriarch Su Tianhe.*
Su Yan read the slip.
He inclined his head.
By the small careful unhurried calibration of the kingdom's standing diplomatic etiquette, a Crown Prince of a foreign kingdom did *not* request a courtesy visit at a host kingdom's clan compound *unless he had a small careful unhurried preceding personal interest in the clan*. Han Yifeng's preceding personal interest was, by the careful unhurried bookkeeping of the past nine months, *known*.
He had been one of the witnesses at the Trial of Aptitude.
He had, by Cousin Su Lin's notebook's careful unhurried entries, been *quietly inquiring* about Su Yan through three different small careful unhurried diplomatic channels for the past four months.
He was, by Linglong's read of his substrate at one of the six banquets — which Han Yifeng had attended at the kingdom of Beicang's southern frontier in the eleventh week — a Foundation Establishment Late cultivator with a *thread* that was, by Linglong's careful unhurried reading, *colder* than the kingdom's standing classification of *ten-thousand-thorn-heart cultivation* would have prepared a substrate-cultivator to expect.
He was, by Cousin Su Lin's small careful unhurried preliminary calibration, *the most dangerous* of the eleven prodigies and four foreign guests confirmed at the Tournament.
He was, by Su Yan's careful read of the courtesy-visit request, *coming early to the compound to take Su Yan's measure before the Tournament*.
Su Yan inclined his head.
He inked the brush.
He wrote, on a clean half-sheet of plain rice paper, in his careful unhurried small private hand:
*Patriarch. The household will, by my preference, accept Crown Prince Han Yifeng's courtesy visit. The reply may be conveyed by your standing arrangement. — Su Yan.*
He sent it.
The kingdom's third quarter, by the careful unhurried calibration of the eleventh week's preceding diplomatic exchange, *had its first careful unhurried external visitor scheduled*.
Su Yan filed it.
In his chest, the ember pulsed — slow, considered — and the dry voice, very quietly, said: *Take his measure also. The careful unhurried file you build on him will be useful for many years.*
Su Yan inclined his head, in the small clean lantern-light of the writing room, in the direction of the ember.
The first snow of the kingdom of Beicang's winter, on the fifty-second day after the cellar's opening, *had been the small precise unhurried calibration mark* of the small careful unhurried beginning of the careful unhurried hundred-and-eight-day preparation for the Royal Tournament of the fifth moon of the spring.
The kingdom's third quarter had, by the small precise calibration of one Crown Prince's preceding courtesy-visit request, *gained its careful unhurried first major external piece*.
